Sonja Ferlov Mancoba and Ernest Mancoba
The artist couple Ernest Mancoba and Sonja Ferlov Mancoba were central figures in 20th century art. South African Ernest Mancoba and Danish Sonja Ferlov Mancoba met in Paris in 1939, where they lived most of their lives. Sonja Ferlov Mancoba had roots in Surrealism, and Ernest Mancoba in African sculptural traditions and African culture and spirituality. The two artists shared a common spirituality and a critical view of society, which was expressed in their modernist art.
