The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer

Wonga picks up question from preceding tape [13-1] on whether they should tell the family's story in a linear fashion or no - returning to Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" as an analogy [in French]; he notes the concept of linearity in time is Western but even so, is not simple

Ernest comments on synthesis in regards to time; Wonga speaks of timelessness as with works of William Shakespeare

history

[tape stopped and restarts] Ernest speaks of the Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie, the desire to charge him as a way to wipe out a past, but that it does not, and that we have a duty to the past

psychology

[tape stopped and restarts] Ernest speaks of a method of investigation by Sigmund Freud - free association - a method of trial and error - in which the patient, in speaking, comes to understand his preoccupations and arrive at the cause of malaise; Wonga asks if Ernest believes that if humans speak freely then humans would come to the heart of the trouble? Ernest confirms; [tape stopped and restarts] Wonga probes Ernest on this belief [Wonga questions in French and Ernest reponds in English]; Wonga considers it as a method for their interviews

Free association was also a technique the Surrealist artists employed. Ernest Mancoba would have learnt the technique from Sonja Ferlov Mancoba and Ejler Bille. Ernest Mancoba refers to "trial and error" in other recordings especially when discussing the role of the artist

[tape stopped and restarts] Wonga considers classical memoires of self-discovery, cites St Augustine, Jean-Jacques Rousseau; [tape stopped and restarts] Wonga considers the treatment of the memoire by Marcel Proust

Wonga's thoughts here are useful for orientating around the hundreds of these audio files which appear repetitive and digressive.

Preceding file: 13-1. Even though Wonga continues his rumination on how to approach the narration of Ernest's memoire, the discussion speaks to their consideration of art in general.

 | About the recordings: Ernest Mancoba's son, Marc also known as Wonga, recorded interviews with his father. The interviews seemed to serve different purposes and are not in chronological order.
