[cont'd from 33-1] Ernest recalls his first contact with African art was from his mother, through her "poetic" response to an artwork he was making at home
Ernest does not identify the artwork but says it's a figure of a woman and "in England somewhere"; Ernest cannot remember if he brought it to England or if English visitors bought it from him
[tape stopped and restarted] Ernest speaks of a sculptor working in Cape Town who recommended to him a book written by Paul Guillaume, on African art and the Cubists
Ernest misidentified the sculptor but it is likely to be Lippy Lipshitz
The book is "Primitive Negro Sculptures" (1929)
