Dada was an artistic and literary movement in the early part of the 20th century that could be said to take an nihilist or "anti-art" approach as a reaction to the modern age

The Surrealist movement followed in the years between World Wars I and II, and championed the irrational and unconscious over society's oppressive rationality

Ernest observes that those artistic efforts have been put aside as lacking in conviction. Yet humans need something to believe in
