Ferlov Mancoba

Hans Hartung

Hartung left Germany in 1928 for Paris. During the war, he enlisted with the French Foreign Legion and fought in North Africa. He lost a leg and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre. In 1960, he won the Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale. His gestural paintings inspired American Lyrical abstraction of the 1960s.
