 My dear Sonja, Since yesterday when we met I have been thinking again. Whether we are not trying to keep up an illusion of what our understanding was before the changing of material circumstances brought about by the war. When I saw your face I could see the tremendous strain of the situation marked clearly. You at the prime of life called upon to sacrifice months, perhaps years for a project which may never bring satisfaction. If we could at least be clear of the future there would be some hope. Socially and economically we shall always be outcasts. I have nothing to give but cold, starvation and misery and on top of that I am interned. I think Sonja we should revise our relationship and adjust ourselves cold-headedly to actual realities of the moment. I do not believe that your life should be cut off from developping and damaged. I do not believe you should avoid situations which will give fruit and results which will be satisfactory to your personality. We have not long in this life. When I get out from prison we may begin again if we know where we left off. You know Sonja the tremendous love I have for you. Ernest.
